The Hopkins County KY Jail is a medium-security detention center located at 2250 Laffoon Tr Madisonville, KY which is operated locally by the Hopkins County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Hopkins County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Madisonville Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.

Programs – These classes are provided with the intention of positively influencing and helping to prepare inmates toward non-criminal acts and lifestyles upon release. However some inmates are court-ordered to attend certain classes.

PROGRAMS: The Hopkins County Jail offers the following self-help recreational programs. These programs are subject to change without notice. Pre-trial inmates are not eligible for these programs. It is the inmates’ responsibility to pay the fees indicated. All fees must be paid in advance. County inmates that have been court-ordered to attend these services will be required to pay for these services. Whether you are indigent or not, you will have to pay for these services after you get released from jail regardless of your situation. Refusing to attend a program without cause shall result in permanent removal from the program. Being disruptive in a program shall result in permanent removal from the program.

Please note: Just because the Judge has ordered you to attend any of these classes does not mean you are required to attend them while incarcerated.

11. 6 month in house “Get A Life” Substance Abuse Program a. To apply for the “Get A Life” program, you must fill out a requisition form for an application and meet all guidelines.

CONTRABAND: Any item that is capable of use to endanger the safety or security of the facility, any authorized item in excess of authorized amount, or any authorized item that has been altered from its original state. Items that have been made from jail issued materials shall be confiscated and destroyed. You will be billed for the vandalized property and may be charged with the destruction of county property and face disciplinary actions or criminal charges. If the contraband is illegal or dangerous you may be charged with a Felony and prosecuted. All Contraband including excessive property, commissary, and altered items will be confiscated and destroyed.

SEARCHES: Unannounced and random searches are required under Kentucky Jail Standards. Inmates do not have the right to be present. If you are allowed to be present do not interfere with the search. Inmates shall remain quiet during the search and follow the directives given by the staff.

Substance Abuse Program: SAP is also known as “Get a Life Substance Abuse Program” is a 6-month course that meets 40 hours a week. This collection of classes covers several areas of concern for individuals recovering from drug/alcohol abuse. Inmates also receive good time credit and earn money while attending the course. During the course individuals receive information from a state-certified counselor and local volunteers in the following areas:

• Recovery Dynamics Is a 12-step program that helps individuals understand and maximize the teachings given by Alcoholics Anonymous.
• Criminal Thinking Errors Works to show the differences in thinking patterns between offenders and non-offenders. Allowing participants to develop interventions to assist in preventing further offenses and future incarceration.
• Rational Behavioral Training Is a group designed to assist in understanding the relationship between perceptions and the emotional states that that drive behavior. Allowing individuals to understand and reduce negative emotional states when possible.
• Substance Abuse Education Is designed to educate individuals about many drugs and how they affect the body physically and the impact of these substances on brain chemistry.
• Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous Consists of lectures, study groups and discussion based on the programs of AA and NA.
• Relapse Prevention Is designed to identify thoughts, feelings, actions and situations that lead individuals to relapse back into active drug abuse. Allowing them to build and plan a prevention plan for the future.
• Group Counseling Covers a wide variety of topics, facilitated by an instructor certified with the state.

Mail is picked up and delivered every weekday (excluding holidays). Inmates may receive mail from other jails and prisons as well as the public. Incoming mail is sorted, scanned for contraband, and then delivered to the inmates on the next day, with the exception of legal or certified mail. Legal and/or Certified mail is opened in the inmate’s presence and inspected. Incoming mail without the sender’s name and return address will be refused.

Inmates may also have books mailed to them as well. The guidelines for mailing an inmate a book are:

1. All books must be soft back books.
2. All books must be new.
3. All books must be sent from a known bookstore such as Amazon, Barns & Noble etc.

Books will be rejected if:

1. The books promote nudity, violence, gun or gang-related material, illegal activity, racism, hate or mistreatment of others.
2. The books contain information that hinders the safety & security of the facility, inmates or staff.
3. The books are hard backed.
4. The packaging or books have been tampered with. Books MUST be mailed directly from the store to the inmate.

All inmates are expected to adhere to the inmate rule of only having three (3) personal reading books in their possession. Any inmate found to be in possession of more than three (3) personal reading books, the extra books will be placed in the library.

Visitors must check in with reception at least 15 minutes prior to their visit.

VISITATION DRESS CODE – In keeping with the institution’s policy of maintaining a healthy, relaxed visiting atmosphere, the adoption of reasonable standard dress code has been established.

1. All visitors shall be expected to dress in appropriate attire while at the Jail.  If in the opinion of the admitting officer, the visitor is not properly clothed in accordance with this dress code, the visit shall be denied.  Additionally, proper dress shall be maintained throughout the visit.
2. Any modest attire including a dress, skirt, blue jeans, pantsuit, blouse and shirt recommended as appropriate for females.  Shorts shall be allowed but shall not exceed more than six (6) inches above the knee & dress or skirt, and any split, slit, zipper, or buttons thereon, shall not exceed four (4) inches above the knee.  
3. Undergarments, including bra and underwear worn by a female visitor, shall be worn at all times.
4. A halter top, tank top, hot pants, short-shorts, mini-skirt, and see-through clothing shall not be allowed.  Clothing which does not completely cover the midriff, cleavage, or breasts, shall not be acceptable.
5. A male visitor shall be expected to wear long or short pants and a long or short sleeve shirt.  Bermuda shorts shall be permitted provided the shorts do not extend more than (6) inches above the knee.  A tank top, cutoffs, muscle shirt, or see-through clothing of any type shall be prohibited.  Underwear shall be worn.
6. Footwear shall be required at all times.
